Agartala, August 12: Tripura is set to usher in a new era of power generation with the establishment of the country’s first-ever 120 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant at Rukhia. The project, spearheaded by Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL) and funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will use environmentally friendly technology to boost electricity production without additional fuel consumption, ensuring affordable power supply to consumers.

Through a global e-tender process, Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) emerged as the lowest bidder with a proposal of ₹1,119 crore 30 lakh 15 thousand (excluding GST). A contract for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of the plant has already been signed between TPGL and MEIL.

The power plant will be configured with two gas turbines, two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), and one steam turbine (2GT + 2HRSG + 1ST). The gas turbines, each with a capacity of 57 MW under ISO conditions, will be SGT-800 models manufactured by Siemens Energy AB — marking the first time such high-efficiency turbines, known for their exceptional start-stop capability, will be installed in an Indian power plant.

The project will be executed jointly by Siemens and MEIL. On August 11, a six-member team from MEIL and Siemens visited the Rukhia project site and later met TPGL Managing Director Biswajit Basu in Agartala.

Siemens representatives stated that the SGT-800 turbines are globally acclaimed for their efficiency and will play a vital role in meeting both the base and peak load power demands of Tripura. Once completed, the project will not only pave the way for Tripura’s self-reliance in power generation but also set a historic benchmark in India’s energy technology sector.
