Agartala: Environment, Science and Technology Minister Animesh Debbarma has called upon fish farmers to adopt Wolffia globosa cultivation as a sustainable and organic alternative fish feed. He said that the research conducted by the Biotechnology Division of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment has opened up new opportunities in the fisheries sector, and farmers should be motivated to utilize this innovation.
Speaking at a one-day workshop on “Wolffia Globosa as an Alternative Fish Feed” held at Pragya Bhavan, Minister Debbarma emphasized that the subject should not remain confined within seminars. He stressed the need for hands-on training for fish farmers and urged fisheries officials to ensure hygienic and eco-friendly environments in ponds and water bodies used for fish cultivation. He also highlighted that Wolffia farming can serve as an additional source of income for farmers and hence awareness should be spread at the grassroots level.
The Minister also interacted with the participating fish farmers, advising them to adopt scientific and sustainable methods of fish farming.
The workshop, jointly organized by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment and Lembuchhara College of Fisheries, witnessed participation from researchers, professors, fisheries experts, and fish farmers.
Professor A.B. Patel of the College of Fisheries discussed the production potential of Wolffia globosa, while Senior Scientific Officer Dashu Chakma elaborated on its crucial role in fish nutrition. Dr. Papri Das Sengupta, Principal-in-Charge of Ramthakur College, spoke on fish species that consume mosquito larvae, thus contributing to vector control. Dr. Bhagabhi Priyadarshini, Associate Professor of the College of Fisheries, presented insights on the development of fish feed products from Wolffia. Dr. Nandini Gupta, Associate Professor of Bir Bikram College, shared her expertise on vermitechnology.
The program was also addressed by Biotechnology Director Mahendra Singh (welcome address) and Joint Director Anjan Sengupta (vote of thanks).
Fish farmers from West Tripura district, along with students from biotechnology departments of Holy Cross, Fisheries College, Ramthakur College, and BBMC, actively participated in the workshop.
