Agartala, November 6: The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Thursday staged a sit-in protest in Agartala, sharply criticizing both the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state over what it described as rising corruption, worsening unemployment, inflation, drug abuse, and a serious decline in law and order.

The protest, organized under the directives of the state Congress leadership, saw active participation from all wings of the party, including the Youth Congress, NSUI, Mahila Congress, and Seva Dal. The demonstrators raised several key demands — making Tripura a drug-free state, filling all vacant posts in schools and colleges, ending outsourcing practices, ensuring women’s safety, passing the 125th Constitutional Amendment, granting Roman script for Kokborok, and curbing inflation.

Prominent Congress leaders such as TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Tribal Congress chief Sabda Kumar Jamatia, Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha, Mahila Congress president Sarbani Ghosh, and youth leader Amir Hussain led the agitation. They announced that similar protests are being organized across Tripura to mount pressure on the government.

Addressing the gathering, Sudip Roy Barman accused the BJP and RSS of distorting India’s history and pursuing divisive politics. “India is facing its worst phase since Independence — unemployment is soaring, corruption is rampant, and democratic rights are being trampled. The Modi government is serving corporate giants like Ambani and Adani at the expense of ordinary citizens,” he alleged.

TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha claimed Tripura has turned into a “drug-infested and corruption-driven state” under the BJP. “Criminals enjoy political protection, while crimes against women, unemployment, and poor education continue to rise. Congress will continue its fight to restore public faith,” he asserted.

The protest concluded with a pledge to intensify statewide agitations until the government addresses the state’s deepening economic and social crises.
