Kolkata, May 25 — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Dr. Tapan Kumar Jana, head of the Anatomy Department at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, for his alleged involvement in a human organ trafficking racket. Dr. Jana was detained in Kolkata following extensive overnight raids at his residence in Burdwan town, East Burdwan district.

The search operation began around midnight on Saturday and continued until early Sunday morning. During the raid, Dr. Jana was not present at home. His wife, Dr. Sushmita Jana—also a faculty member at a Kolkata-based medical college—reportedly informed CBI officials that her husband was on duty at Murshidabad at the time.

CBI sources said Dr. Jana will be produced before a special court in Kolkata, where the agency will seek his custody for detailed interrogation. Apart from his position at Murshidabad Medical College, Dr. Jana is also associated with the National Medical Council (NMC) as an assessor, a role that has now come under scrutiny.

Investigators have indicated that Jana is suspected to be part of a larger network involved not only in human organ trafficking but also in producing manipulated NMC assessment reports for financial gain. A Karnataka-based medical college recently filed a complaint accusing him of demanding ₹10 lakh to arrange a favourable NMC assessment report.

During the raid, CBI officials seized cash, gold and diamond jewellery, a computer hard disk, and several documents believed to be linked to the ongoing investigation. Officials suspect that these items may contain crucial evidence relating to the illicit racket.

The entire operation was conducted in compliance with due procedure, with the CBI team alerting the local police station before commencing the search. Eight CBI officials were involved in the raid, which forms part of a broader probe into organised corruption and illegal medical practices. Investigators believe more revelations may emerge once Dr. Jana is questioned in custody.
