Agartala, May 16: Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has praised the Tripura state government’s women empowerment policy, launched in 2022, for delivering impactful results. In his ongoing ‘Transforming Tripura’ series on social media, Deb outlined how the policy, unveiled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on International Women’s Day (March 8, 2022), has strengthened the economic and social status of women across the state.

With an allocation of Rs 400 crore, the policy focuses on ensuring women’s independence and dignity through targeted measures. Among its key features is a 33% reservation for women in all government and outsourced jobs, alongside the introduction of educational loans at a 3% interest rate to encourage higher education among women.

For the first time in Tripura, the government has also implemented a 10% reservation for women in police recruitment, marking a significant step toward inclusive law enforcement.

Deb reported a substantial increase in the number of women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which now total 53,036, encompassing 4,76,739 women. These groups play a vital role in promoting financial self-reliance and grassroots entrepreneurship.

Additional initiatives include concessions in land registration when properties are registered in women’s names, allocation of ration shops to women, and improved access to loans, all aimed at enhancing women’s financial independence.

Criticizing the previous Left Front government, Deb stated that women were often mobilized for political rallies, but true empowerment remained elusive. In contrast, he emphasized that the current government is implementing concrete, progressive policies to bridge the gender gap.

The policy, Deb affirmed, is a reflection of the state’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive development.
