Churaibari, May 12: Police in Churaibari uncovered a substantial quantity of cannabis concealed inside electrical transformers during a raid at a naka checkpoint on Monday afternoon. Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted a six-wheeled truck traveling from Agartala to Guwahati, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of 960 kg of cannabis worth approximately ₹3.5 crore.

During the inspection, duty officer Khokon Saha observed loose bolts on the electronic transformers in the truck, raising suspicion. Upon further examination, police discovered 96 packets of dried cannabis—each weighing ten kilograms—hidden inside ten transformers. Authorities estimate the black-market value of the contraband to be around ₹4 crore.

Following the discovery, the truck driver, Adesh Kumar (42), and his assistant, Pramod Kumar (59), both residents of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, were taken into custody.

Churaibari police station officer-in-charge Khokon Saha stated that a case would be registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the smuggling operation. The arrested suspects are set to be presented before the district court on Tuesday.

Senior officials, including district police superintendent Avinash Rai, sub-divisional police officer B. Jorin Puiya, and DCM Genius Debbarma, were present during the confiscation of the seized cannabis. The successful operation has drawn attention to smuggling methods and heightened security measures in the area.
