Every year on the 7th day of the Bengali month of Baisakh, the revered Garia Puja is celebrated with great devotion. Considered the most significant festival of the indigenous communities in Tripura, Garia Puja is observed with religious fervor and traditional customs throughout the state.
As the festival approaches, enthusiasm and festive spirit are visible across Tripura. The entire state prepares to pay homage to Baba Garia, a deity believed to bring prosperity, good harvests, and well-being to the people.
On the eve of the celebration, various local committees in Agartala are busy with elaborate arrangements to mark the occasion. Among the prominent organizing groups are the Nazirpukur Puja Committee, Prabhat Chandra Roy Puja Committee, KBC Puja Committee, and Pragati Play Centre Puja Committee. Each of these committees is preparing to host the puja with dedication and traditional rituals.
A special puja will also be held under the Abhaynagar Bridge at the Netaji Club, which has become a notable location for Garia Puja celebrations in the city. In addition to the rituals, a fair is typically organized in the area, attracting large crowds. However, due to ongoing developmental work in the Katakhal region, this year’s fair will be held on a smaller scale, as confirmed by the organizers.
Garia Puja is more than a religious event—it is a cultural expression of the indigenous identity of Tripura’s tribal communities. It brings together people from various backgrounds in celebration of unity, tradition, and hope for a prosperous year ahead.
With the festival scheduled for tomorrow, the entire state is gearing up for a vibrant celebration filled with devotion, music, dance, and community gatherings.
