Agartala, May 1: Despite efforts by the Tripura government to improve school infrastructure, students in certain areas continue to face dire learning conditions, prompting protests across the state.

On Thursday, students of Salema Colony Class-XII School took to the streets, staging a road blockade to highlight the unsafe condition of their school building. According to protesting students, the classrooms have become hazardous, with ceiling plaster crumbling regularly and posing a serious threat to their safety.

“Our classrooms are falling apart. Every day we fear getting hurt by falling plaster,” a student said. In addition to the physical dangers, the students voiced concerns about the lack of basic facilities, including inadequate fans during the intense summer heat.

The protest also brought attention to the school’s severe shortage of teachers. Students complained that the teacher shortfall is disrupting their education, with many classes being irregular or cancelled altogether.

In a similar incident on the same day, students of Cherma Higher Secondary School in Singicherra, Khowai district, staged a road blockade on the Khowai–Kamalpur road. Their key demand was the appointment of sufficient teachers to ensure smooth academic functioning.

“These issues are affecting our future. We want the government to listen and act now,” one of the protesters stated.

Both demonstrations reflect growing frustration among students over unfulfilled promises and neglect of essential educational needs. While the government claims to be upgrading infrastructure across the state, these protests expose the gaps in implementation, especially in remote or rural areas.

The students have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate steps to repair school buildings, provide adequate facilities, and fill vacant teaching positions to secure a safe and conducive learning environment.
