Agartala, May 23: The state finance minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Friday inaugurated a programme here at Udaipur Dhanya Manikya Mukta Mancha to mark the World Turtle Day and said that the Tripureswari Temple in Udaipur is also known as ‘Kurma Pith’ because the temple is situated on a hillock that resembles the shape of a tortoise.
Addressing the programme, the minister said that Devotees observe the turtles living in the Kalyan Sagar lake adjacent to the temple as the symbol of the Goddess Tripura beauty.
The program held today mainly discussed the importance of turtle conservation, increasing breeding and determining the number of different species of turtles, which is an important step in protecting the environment.
The minister said that the government has taken the initiative to celebrate World Turtle Day for the first time in the state. He said, “The day is not only about showing love and respect for turtles, but also about how we can protect their habitat.” Social balance should be maintained by protecting biodiversity. For this purpose, the state government has taken the initiative to celebrate World Turtle Day for the first time, he added.
Meanwhile, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma said, to protect human society, the ecosystem must be protected. And to protect the ecosystem, plants, animals, and birds must be preserved and protected, he added.
MLA Abhishek Debroy, Chief Conservator of Forests R K Samal, MLA Jitendra Majumdar, Gomati Zilla Parishad President Deval Debroy, Gomati District Forest Officer H B Ganesh, Matabari Panchayat Samiti Chairman Shilpi Das, Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma, Matabari Block BDO Arijit Pal and others were present at the event.
