New Delhi, Aug 20: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly Jan Sunvai at her Civil Lines residence on Wednesday morning, in what is being seen as a serious security lapse.

The attacker has been identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. According to sources, the Delhi Police have contacted their counterparts in Gujarat for further details about him. Official confirmation on his background and motive is still awaited.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. when CM Gupta was listening to grievances from the public. As she approached Rajesh, he began shouting, grabbed her hand, and allegedly hurled a heavy object at her. Sources said Gupta fell to the ground during the assault. Unverified reports claim that Rajesh slapped the Chief Minister, pulled her hair, and abused her after handing over some papers related to a court case.

Police teams, led by Commissioner Shashi Bhushan Kumar Singh, are investigating the case. The attacker is currently being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the assault.

The Chief Minister is under medical observation to determine the extent of her injuries. Senior police officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police, rushed to the residence following the incident. Security at the CM’s residence has since been further tightened.

The attack has raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures at public hearings held by the Chief Minister. An internal inquiry has been ordered to establish how the breach occurred despite the presence of tight security.

More details are awaited as the investigation continues.
