Agartala, Aug 20 — The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Wednesday observed the 81st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, paying homage to his enduring legacy and transformative vision for India.

The day’s commemorations began at the Congress Bhavan in Agartala, where TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha and senior party leaders hoisted the national and party flags. A floral tribute was later offered at Rajiv Gandhi’s statue, followed by a solemn ceremony at Gandhi Ghat, where leaders paid respects at the Shaheed Bedi (Martyrs’ Memorial).

The TPCC also observed the occasion as Sadbhavana Diwas, celebrating the spirit of unity, peace, and progress that Rajiv Gandhi championed during his political career. Speaking to reporters, Saha said: “Today, as we observe Sadbhavana Diwas, we remember Rajiv Gandhi, a remarkable leader who inspired hope in millions and propelled India into the 21st century.”

He highlighted Gandhi’s far-reaching contributions, including:

  • Lowering the voting age to 18, empowering youth participation in democracy.
  • Strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions, decentralizing governance.
  • Spearheading the telecom and IT revolution, laying the foundation for Digital India.
  • Promoting computerization across government and education sectors.
  • Facilitating peace accords in conflict-prone regions.
  • Advocating women’s empowerment and expanding educational access.
  • Launching universal vaccination programs, improving public health.
  • Introducing a new education policy centered on equity and inclusion.

Saha noted that the observance was not merely a tribute but also a reaffirmation of the Congress party’s commitment to Gandhi’s ideals of harmony, progress, and inclusive development.

The TPCC reiterated its pledge to carry forward Rajiv Gandhi’s vision of a modern, united, and forward-looking India.
