In a major step to support livelihoods and strengthen the fisheries sector, the Tripura Fisheries Department distributed cash compensation to nearly 2,000 fish farmers affected by last year’s devastating floods. The event, held at Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala, saw affected farmers—mostly from West Tripura—receive cheques ranging from ₹6,800 to ₹10,000. Nets and iceboxes were also distributed to enhance fishing capabilities.
Fisheries and ARDD Minister Sudhangshu Das, along with Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder and MLAs Antara Dev Sarkar and Meena Rani Sarkar, attended the programme. Das highlighted the department’s focused efforts to assist fish farmers and build self-reliance in fish production.
“We are providing free fish fingerlings, feed, scientific guidance, and modern technology to create jobs and reduce dependency on external fish supplies,” Das told the media.
Despite Tripura’s high per capita annual fish consumption of 27.5 kg, the state faces a supply-demand gap. While the demand stands at 1.17 lakh metric tonnes (MT), current production is around 87,000 MT, leaving a shortfall of 30,000 MT.
“Our mission is to bridge this gap and double the income of fish farmers,” Das said.
He urged farmers to adopt integrated farming—combining fishery with livestock and agriculture—for sustained income. He added that substantial subsidies are available under the National Livestock Mission, and the government is ready to assist at every stage—from planning to implementation.
“Fishery and integrated farming offer some of the highest returns. What’s needed is dedication and proper planning,” Das emphasized, assuring continued state support to the sector.
