Agartala, Aug 24: Tripura has made remarkable progress in its healthcare sector in recent years, thanks to the sincere efforts of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, said Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte at a press conference held at the Agartala Press Club today.

The Health Secretary said that modern and advanced facilities are now available in the state’s leading institutions such as Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the state. “Earlier, around 2,000 patients were referred outside the state every year. Today, that number has dropped to almost one-third,” he stated.
According to official data, 774 patients were referred outside the state in 2022–23, 722 in 2023–24, and 690 in the current financial year 2024–25. Gitte credited the steady decline to the upgradation of health infrastructure in the state.

He informed that Tripura’s three major hospitals — GBP, IGM, and Cancer Hospital — together have nearly 2,200 beds, and their outpatient departments serve 4,000–5,000 people daily. AGMC and GBP Hospital currently provide multiple specialty and nine super-specialty services. Facilities such as CT scan, USG, MRI, blood banks, trauma and emergency care, dialysis, OT services, ICU beds (116 in total), and round-the-clock laboratories are also operational across the state.

Highlighting government initiatives, Gitte said that under both Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana, patients are receiving benefits effectively. He also informed that 45 specialist doctors were recently recruited through TPSC, while steps are being taken to bring in expert gynecologists from outside the state to strengthen maternal care.

Plans are underway to set up a 200-bed Mother and Child Hospital and launch eight new courses and services. Antivenom drugs have been made available in all primary health centers. “If there are certain surgeries not yet available here, we will bring specialists from outside the state to provide the service locally,” Gitte added.
The press meet was also attended by senior doctors, including GBP Hospital Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, ABV Regional Cancer Centre Superintendent Dr. Shiromani Debbarma, Cardiologist Dr. Aninda Sundar Trivedi, IGM Hospital Superintendent Dr. Debashri Debbarma, Surgeon Dr. Maniranjan Debbarma, Neurologist Dr. Reddy, and Gynecology & Obstetrics expert Dr. Jayanta Roy, who all shared inputs on the state’s medical advancements.
