Agartala, Aug 28: To discuss and find solutions for the specific challenges related to child rights in the North Eastern states of India, a day long regional convention on child rights of North Eastern region of the country was held here at Agartala Pragna Bhavan.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Sagar has inaugurated the programme in presence of the minister of social welfare and social education department Tinku Roy, Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Tripti Gurha, Secretary of department of social welfare and social education Tapas Ray and others. Chairpersons and members of SCPCR of the North Eastern region of the country have participated in the convention.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said that the government is working tirelessly to safeguard and protect the rights of every children of the state and empower them through various means.
He that ensuring child rights is the key to building a better and progressive society. “Children are the future of society. Protecting their rights is not just the responsibility of the government but of families, communities, and society as a whole,” he said.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Government of India has enacted several laws to safeguard children and called for collective efforts to eliminate child labour and child marriage. “Only by ensuring child rights can we create a strong, prosperous society. If we neglect children, we are neglecting the future of our nation,” he remarked.
Dr. Saha informed that Tripura has established four Child Care Institutions where 947 children are being provided shelter and care. Juvenile Justice Boards have been constituted in all eight districts, along with Child Welfare Committees to ensure protection and rehabilitation of destitute and orphan children. The state is also providing monthly financial assistance of ₹4,000 per child to 4,234 children under its sponsorship programme for education, healthcare, and proper care.
The Chief Minister further said that Juvenile Police Units have been set up across all districts, while One-Stop Centres for children are operational and two more are being planned. Over 2.29 lakh children have been brought under Anganwadi and Poshan Abhiyan services in recent years. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to make the North East a model region for child protection, and Tripura is working in the same direction to ensure no child is deprived of education, healthcare, or basic rights,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, who also addressed the convention, emphasised the government’s commitment to children’s education and welfare through Anganwadi centres, maternal nutrition schemes, bicycles for schoolgirls, scooters for college students, scholarships, and promotion of sports through Para Games.
