Chandigarh, Oct 9: In a major success against Pakistan’s ISI-backed terror network, the Counter Intelligence (CI) Jalandhar unit has busted a Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) module operated by UK-based handlers Nishan Jaurian and Adesh Jamarai, acting under the directions of BKI mastermind Harwinder Singh Rinda, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday.

The police arrested two BKI operatives, Gurjinder Singh and Diwan Singh, from Jalandhar, recovering 2.5 kg of IED/RDX and a remote control device. Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosives were meant for a targeted terror attack in the state.

An FIR has been registered in Amritsar under relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosives Substances Act. The DGP said that efforts are underway to identify the wider network and trace the handlers’ linkages abroad.

The breakthrough comes close on the heels of a state-level law and order review chaired by DGP Yadav last month, where he directed all senior officers to ensure a peaceful festive season. He empowered the force to act decisively against gangsters, drug traffickers, and anti-social elements.

“Accountability of every officer—from constable to SSP—will be fixed, and no laxity will be tolerated on the gangster or drug fronts,” Yadav warned during the September 30 virtual meeting with police officials.

He emphasised professional investigations to trace the source of terror consignments and identify “big fish” in the network. He also instructed officers to send seized mobile phones of criminals for forensic examination to expose linkages and facilitate further arrests.

Reiterating the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, Yadav said, “Anyone, regardless of rank, found involved in corrupt practices will face strict and exemplary action.”
