Police have arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged robbery and assault on a driver and his passengers near Natunagar while they were on their way to Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport earlier this week, officials said on Friday night.
According to an officer from Agartala Airport Police Station, the complaint was lodged by Alamin, a resident of Motinagar in Sonamura. The incident reportedly took place on February 25 when Alamin was driving his four-wheeler from Sonamura to the airport with several passengers on board.
Police said that near the Natunagar area, the vehicle was intercepted by a group of unidentified persons. The accused allegedly forced the driver to alter his route and compelled him to stop the vehicle at a secluded location. The driver and his passengers were then assaulted. During the incident, the miscreants allegedly looted six mobile phones and cash from the victims before fleeing the spot.
Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and conducted a series of operations to identify those involved. The prime accused, identified as Ricky Singh, was arrested first. Based on his statement during interrogation, another suspect, Ankur Chakraborty, was subsequently apprehended.
Officials confirmed that all six stolen mobile phones were recovered from the possession of the accused. A car allegedly used in committing the offence was also seized as part of the investigation.
One of the arrested individuals has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation. Police are continuing their probe to determine whether more persons were involved in the crime. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
