Kolkata, Dec 28: Ghulam Nabi Azad, son of Bharatpur MLA and suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Humayun Kabir, was detained by police on Sunday in connection with an alleged assault on the MLA’s security guard in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.

Police sources said personnel from Shaktipur police station went to Kabir’s residence in Shaktipur and detained Azad, also known as Sohel, following a written complaint lodged by the security guard. The incident reportedly took place at Kabir’s office during a meeting with party workers.

According to local sources, a state police constable assigned to Kabir’s security approached him seeking leave. Kabir allegedly refused, leading to an argument between the two. During the altercation, Azad arrived at the office and allegedly assaulted the constable. The security guard is also reported to have retaliated before leaving the spot and proceeding directly to the police station to file a complaint.

After the complaint was registered, police visited Kabir’s residence and detained his son. Kabir was not present at home at the time, sources added. Following the development, the MLA went to Shaktipur police station in protest and issued a strong warning to the police administration.

Kabir alleged that the security guard had abruptly entered his office without any valid reason and demanded leave. “Why did the security guard barge into my office? My son pushed him out. The guard also assaulted my son,” Kabir claimed, accusing the police of acting vindictively. He further threatened to gherao the office of the Murshidabad Superintendent of Police on Thursday if any action was taken against his family members, warning that he would bring Berhampur to a standstill.

However, a senior Murshidabad district police officer rejected Kabir’s version, stating that the constable did not seek leave and that an investigation was underway into the alleged assault on a police officer while on duty.

Reacting to the incident, TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said Kabir had himself admitted that his son assaulted the security guard, adding that the police were duty-bound to act in such cases.

Notably, Humayun Kabir was earlier suspended from the TMC for anti-party activities.
