Agartala, February 25, 2026: A delegation of 21 journalists on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, demanding a high-level and impartial investigation against two ruling alliance MLAs—Ram Prasad Paul and Ranjit Debbarma—over alleged anti-democratic and unlawful activities.
The delegation met the Governor at Lok Bhavan in Agartala and submitted a written complaint outlining a series of allegations. Representatives included Shanit Debroy, Sebak Bhattacharjee, Pranab Sarkar, Dr. Biswendu Bhattacharjee, Dibakar Debnath and Abhijit Ghosh.
According to the memorandum, on February 14, MLA Ram Prasad Paul allegedly led a protest outside the residence of Shanit Debroy, editor of a local daily and a news channel. The journalists claimed that during the protest, demonstrators marked a photograph of Debroy with a red cross and issued threats to his life while also attempting to malign him by spreading false information. Although a case was reportedly filed at AD Nagar Police Station, the delegation alleged that no arrests have been made so far.
In a separate allegation, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma was accused of targeting journalist Pranab Sarkar through social media after a television report highlighted aspects of his past. The memorandum stated that Sarkar filed six separate complaints citing threats, abusive language and defamatory remarks. However, it was alleged that police have not formally registered the cases.
The journalists expressed concern that such incidents pose a serious threat to press freedom and democratic values in the state. They urged the Governor to ensure a neutral and high-level inquiry into the matter.
Governor Nallu heard the delegation patiently and assured them that the issue would be examined appropriately and necessary steps taken.
