• Police probe attack at health worker’s residence

Agartala, June 20: Tension prevailed in the Badharghat area of Agartala after a violent attack at the residence of a health department employee left several people injured and triggered allegations of vandalism, assault, and police inaction.

The incident occurred on Friday night near Badharghat Stadium when a group of around 40 to 45 people allegedly entered the residence of Kaberi Sinha, a health department employee, and carried out extensive damage to property while assaulting those present in the house.

According to Sinha, the attack was linked to a long-standing personal dispute involving allegations of an extramarital relationship between her and colleague Partha Choudhury. The matter had reportedly led to earlier complaints filed by Choudhury’s wife at multiple police stations, prompting authorities to transfer both employees to separate workplaces in an attempt to ease tensions.

Speaking to reporters, Sinha alleged that the attackers were associated with a local political unit. She further claimed that the violence unfolded in the presence of police personnel, raising concerns about the response of law enforcement authorities. According to her family members, despite police deployment in the area, some individuals allegedly re-entered the house and launched a second round of attacks.

Sinha stated that she was not at home when the incident began and was informed about the situation through a phone call. Upon returning to her residence, she allegedly found Choudhury being assaulted. She claimed that when she and her elderly mother attempted to intervene, they too were attacked by members of the crowd.

Several people, including Sinha, her mother, and Choudhury, sustained injuries and were later shifted to a hospital for treatment. Family members said at least four to five individuals were hurt during the violence.

The attack also resulted in significant property damage. A car, three motorcycles, CCTV cameras, furniture, and various household items were reportedly vandalized. The exact extent of the losses has not yet been officially assessed.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with allegations of involvement by local BJP leaders. However, no official statement has been issued by the party, while police are yet to release a detailed account of the events.

Additional police personnel from Arundhutinagar police station were deployed to restore order. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the violence and identify those responsible.
