Agartala, July 28: In a significant anti-narcotics operation, East Agartala Police on Sunday evening seized heroin worth ₹10 lakh from two women at Bankumari Bazar, dealing a major blow to illegal drug trafficking in the region.
Briefing the media on Monday, West Tripura Superintendent of Police Dr. Kiran Kumar K. stated that the operation was conducted following a tip-off received by the police. The raid, led by Officer-in-Charge Subrata Debnath, resulted in the detention of two women—Rozna Begum (35) of Bishalgarh and Kolsom Begum (25) of Madhupur.
During the search, police recovered nine packets of heroin, weighing a total of 97.5 grams, from their possession. Two mobile phones, suspected to have been used for coordinating the smuggling activities, were also seized.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the contraband was smuggled into Tripura from Silchar in Assam,” SP Dr. Kumar said. “We suspect the involvement of a wider inter-state drug trafficking network.”
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused were produced before the court on Monday, where police sought custody for further interrogation to trace the source and network of the drug operation.
