Agartala: Oct 19: A shocking incident of assault on a journalist took place late Friday night in Agartala. V–News editor Arghyajyoti Dutta and his wife were allegedly attacked by an auto driver and his accomplices at Bhati Abhoynagar, in the heart of the city.
According to reports, the incident occurred when an auto-rickshaw driven by Rikitan Das dangerously overtook Dutta’s car on the road. The reckless maneuver led to a heated altercation between the two parties. As the argument escalated, the auto driver, joined by a few unidentified miscreants, allegedly launched a physical attack on Dutta and his wife.
Following the assault, Dutta lodged a complaint at West Agartala Police Station, naming Rikitan Das as the main accused. Acting promptly after the intervention of Assembly of Journalists (AOJ) General Secretary Shanit Debroy, the police swung into action and arrested the accused driver the same night. in future he will stand for the journalists always, he said.
The police have registered a case against Das under specific sections of the Indian Penal Code related to assault and public disorder. Investigations are underway to identify the others involved in the attack.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from the journalist fraternity across Tripura. The Assembly of Journalists (AOJ), in a strong statement issued by its member Abhijit Ghosh, denounced the attack and demanded the maximum punishment for those responsible. The organization also urged the authorities to ensure the safety and security of media professionals in the state.
The assault on the V–News editor has once again raised concerns about the growing threats and violence faced by journalists while performing their professional duties.
