New Delhi, Oct 23: In a major crackdown on organised crime, the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, in coordination with Bihar Police, gunned down four wanted gangsters in a late-night encounter in Rohini on Wednesday, officials said on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Ranjan Pathak, Bimlesh Mahto, Manish Pathak, and Aman Thakur—all members of the notorious Sigma gang. The four were carrying a combined reward of ₹1 lakh for their arrest and were wanted in several cases of murder, armed assault, and illegal possession of weapons in Bihar and Delhi.

According to the police, the encounter took place around 2:20 a.m. on the intervening night of October 22–23 near Pancholi Park, Bahadur Shah Marg, Rohini. The operation was launched under the supervision of DCP (Crime Branch) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav following a tip-off from Bihar Police regarding the gang’s movement in Delhi.

“When signalled to stop, the occupants of the vehicle opened heavy fire at the police team without any provocation. The officers retaliated in self-defence, leading to a brief exchange of fire, during which all four accused were injured,” Delhi Police said in a statement.

The injured men were rushed to Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.

Officials said the Sigma gang had been involved in several high-profile killings in Bihar and was allegedly planning a major operation ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Based on surveillance and human intelligence inputs, the police intercepted a white Maruti Suzuki Baleno used by the gang. Three semi-automatic pistols, one country-made firearm, and the car were recovered from the scene.

The Crime Branch has launched further investigations to trace the gang’s network and recover additional weapons.
