Agartala, Nov 7: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday described Vande Mataram as a “sacred mantra of nation-building” while inaugurating the state-level celebration of its 150th anniversary at the State Secretariat. The event marked the launch of a year-long nationwide observance initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the legacy of India’s national song.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha said he felt “immense emotion and pride” while listening to the collective rendition of Vande Mataram. He also joined the virtual broadcast of Prime Minister Modi’s message, which he said would ignite patriotism and the spirit of sacrifice among the younger generation.

Tracing the historical journey of Vande Mataram, the Chief Minister recalled that it was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in the 1870s and later featured in his 1882 novel Anandamath. He highlighted its significance during the Swadeshi and anti-partition movements, its ban under British rule, and its eventual adoption as the National Song of India in 1950.

“The song personifies the motherland as a goddess, creating a deep emotional and spiritual bond among people across regions and religions,” Dr. Saha said, adding that its message of unity and sacrifice remains timeless.

Announcing a series of year-long programmes across districts, subdivisions, institutions, schools, and colleges, the Chief Minister said the initiative aims to educate citizens—especially students—about the song’s history and enduring relevance.

He urged participants to share photos and videos of their involvement on official platforms to foster collective pride and national unity. Concluding his address, Dr. Saha expressed confidence that the celebration would inspire citizens to contribute toward the vision of a “Viksit Bharat”—a developed and united India envisioned by the Prime Minister.
