The 136th birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was observed with solemnity and respect at the Congress Bhavan in Agartala on Friday. The programme began with MLA Gopal Chandra Roy hoisting the national flag, followed by Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha raising the party flag. Leaders from various frontal wings of the party also unfurled their respective flags, marking the commencement of the day’s observance. Several MLAs, senior leaders, and workers were present, reflecting the party’s collective reverence for Nehru’s enduring legacy.

After the flag-hoisting ceremony, party members offered floral tributes at Nehru’s portrait, recalling his immense contributions to nation-building. Later, leaders and workers proceeded to the martyr’s memorial at Gandhighat, where additional tributes were paid. The occasion also coincided with Children’s Day, celebrated nationwide to honour Nehru’s deep affection for children and his belief in nurturing young minds for a stronger future.

Speaking to the media, Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha described Nehru as the “architect of modern India,” noting that Tripura Congress paid heartfelt homage on his 136th birth anniversary. He highlighted Nehru’s unwavering commitment to democratic values, scientific advancement, and inclusive development.

Saha further emphasized Nehru’s belief that children are the foundation of the nation’s future. “His vision placed great importance on children’s health, education, and overall well-being. It was under his leadership that India laid the groundwork for strong democratic institutions and progressive nation-building,” he said.

The commemoration at Congress Bhavan served as a reminder of Nehru’s far-reaching contributions and his ideals, which continue to inspire generations. Party leaders reiterated their resolve to uphold his principles and work toward strengthening the nation in line with his vision.
