Agartala, Nov 17, 2025:
“Is traditional media losing popularity among Generation Z?” — this question took centre stage at a special discussion organised by the Assembly of Journalists (AOJ) on Sunday to mark National Press Day. The seminar brought together journalists from various media houses, media professionals, and journalism students from across the state.

Speaking at the event, AOJ General Secretary Shanith Debroy said the rapidly evolving media ecosystem has fundamentally transformed how news is gathered, presented, and consumed. With Generation Z increasingly gravitating toward digital platforms, traditional media faces a set of fresh and demanding challenges. “To survive, traditional media must adapt to the new habits and expectations of its readers and viewers,” he noted.

Discussants highlighted several factors that may be contributing to the decline of interest in traditional media among the younger generation — slower news delivery compared to digital platforms, the appeal of short-form video content, the overwhelming influence of social media, and rising concerns about credibility. However, many participants also pointed out that traditional media still holds unmatched strengths in accuracy, depth, and reliability of information.

The seminar also delved into broader issues affecting the media landscape today, including the rampant spread of fake news, the ethical responsibilities of news organisations, the urgent need for digital literacy, and the potential direction of future news dissemination. Educasanist Mustafa Kamal, T. University journalism dept. Head sunil Kalai, Educasanist Ashes debbroy and lokesh chakma are also present there.

Emphasising the importance of National Press Day, speakers underscored that a free, responsible, and ethical press is essential for retaining public trust in the media. They concluded that while the mode of content consumption is evolving, the core values of journalism—credibility, integrity, and accountability—remain indispensable for any media platform to survive and stay relevant in the modern age.
