Agartala gears up for Maayer Gomon carnival on Friday
Agartala, Oct 22 :Agartala is gearing up for the ‘Maayer Gomon’ puja carnival on Friday, with puja committees, artists, cultural performers and foreign delegates expected to participate in the annual event marking the farewell to Goddess Durga.
Chief Minister Manik Saha will inaugurate the carnival at a ceremony in front of MTB Girls’ Higher Secondary School. Members of the state cabinet, senior government officials and other dignitaries are also expected to attend the programme.
Mayor Dipak Majumder said various puja organisers and clubs would participate in the event, providing a common platform to showcase their artistic creations and celebrate Tripura’s cultural heritage.
The carnival is being organised as more than a religious procession, with an emphasis on Sanatan values, the state’s cultural traditions and contemporary social messages, he said.
Participating puja committees are expected to present creatively designed tableaux, idols and thematic displays reflecting different aspects of society and culture. Alongside traditional elements of Durga Puja, the presentations will convey messages of social harmony, unity, environmental awareness and responsible citizenship.
The procession and accompanying cultural programmes are expected to attract residents and visitors, creating a festive atmosphere across the city as devotees bid farewell to the goddess.
A notable feature of this year’s carnival will be the participation of foreign delegates and representatives of various embassies. Their presence is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase Tripura’s artistic traditions and cultural diversity before an international audience.
The event is also expected to encourage cultural exchange and highlight Agartala’s potential to host large-scale cultural programmes that combine traditional values with inclusivity.
Local artists and performers will present traditional and contemporary cultural performances, offering them a platform to showcase their talent and reflect the state’s diverse cultural identity.
The Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department has made elaborate arrangements for the event, focusing on coordination with participating puja committees, cultural programmes and the overall presentation of the carnival.
Last year’s event brought together faith, tradition, art and social awareness, reflecting Tripura’s cultural identity while marking the emotional farewell to Goddess Durga.
With preparations nearing completion, the carnival is expected to offer a colourful display of devotion, artistic expression and cultural creativity in the state capital.
The event is expected to draw people from different sections of society, bringing together religious traditions and cultural performances in a shared celebration.
