Mumbai: April 04: Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, widely known for his roles in iconic patriotic films like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai on Friday. Kumar, affectionately called ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his portrayal of nationalist characters, was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after his health deteriorated. He succumbed to heart-related complications at 3:30 AM, with decompensated liver cirrhosis reported as the secondary cause of death, according to the hospital’s medical certificate.

Manoj Kumar was a towering figure in Indian cinema, particularly celebrated for his contributions to films that emphasized national pride and patriotism. His portrayals of courageous, morally upright characters in films like Upkar, Shaheed, and Purab Aur Paschim struck a deep chord with Indian audiences, particularly during the 1960s and 70s. In addition to acting, he was also a successful director and producer, with several hits to his name, including Kranti and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan.

In response to his passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to mourn the loss of the “legendary actor and filmmaker.” Sharing heartfelt tributes, the Prime Minister wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.” Modi extended his condolences to Kumar’s family and fans, adding, “My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”

Kumar’s legacy as one of the greatest actors and filmmakers in the history of Indian cinema will continue to resonate, inspiring future generations through his impactful body of work.
