Agartala: June 05: On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) organized an awareness program at Post Office Chowmuhani, Agartala, to highlight the urgent need for environmental conservation and government accountability in tackling plastic pollution.

The event saw the participation of TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, former TPCC president Pijush Kanti Biswas, and other senior leaders. Holding placards and banners, the leaders advocated for concrete steps to address environmental degradation, with a particular focus on banning single-use plastics in Tripura.

Speaking to the media, TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha reiterated the Congress party’s longstanding commitment to environmental protection. He emphasized that while initial efforts were made by authorities to restrict plastic use in Agartala markets, these enforcement measures had gradually faded.

Saha raised concerns about the widespread use of plastic packaging for essential items such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat. He also criticized the overuse of bottled water and the improper disposal of plastic waste, which often ends up clogging the city’s drains, resulting in waterlogging even during light rainfall.

He accused sections of the ruling government of profiting from the production of flex banners and festoons used in political promotions, further worsening the plastic waste crisis.

Calling for more than symbolic gestures like tree plantation drives, Saha urged the government to take robust and sustained measures to address plastic pollution.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman echoed similar sentiments, stressing that meaningful environmental change requires active public participation. He called on citizens to cooperate in conservation efforts, asserting that collective responsibility is essential for building a sustainable future.
