Agartala, July 5:
Tensions surfaced within the BJP–Tipra Motha alliance after Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma hinted at a possible withdrawal of support from the Tripura government, citing the Centre’s inaction on key tribal issues. However, party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman quickly moved to clarify the party’s position, calling Ranjit’s comments an expression of public frustration rather than an official party stance.
Speaking to the media, Pradyot said, “I wasn’t aware of what our MLA said. I’ll speak to him directly. I’ve also spoken to the Chief Minister. People in the villages are feeling neglected as 18 months have passed since the signing of the tripartite agreement. We must ensure it is implemented. The CM assured us he will raise the matter with the Centre, and we should respect that.”
He added that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has granted Tipra Motha leaders an appointment later this month to discuss their concerns. “The lack of progress on the accord and rising infiltration from Bangladesh have created unrest in tribal areas,” Pradyot stated.
Earlier, Ranjit Debbarma—speaking at Agartala Press Club—criticised the BJP government for failing to deliver on promises, including implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, land rights, pending Village Committee elections, and the delay in passing the 125th Constitutional Amendment for Sixth Schedule areas. He also voiced dissatisfaction over limited cabinet representation, noting that only two Tipra Motha MLAs were made ministers—one without independent charge.
Ranjit revealed that party chief Pradyot will travel to Delhi on July 9 for meetings ahead of a scheduled discussion with Amit Shah on July 20. He also announced an apolitical rally against illegal immigration, expected to attract over 5,000 participants, with Pradyot as the main speaker.
