Police at Churaibari police station have arrested a 26-year-old man accused in multiple criminal cases, including the abduction of a minor girl, bringing a major breakthrough in a long-pending investigation. The accused, identified as Ashu Debnath, son of Avanti Debnath and a resident of Gambhira Amtilla under Ratabari police station in Sribhumi district of Assam, was taken into custody late Sunday night.

According to police officials, the case dates back to July 29 last year, when Debnath allegedly lured a minor girl from the Chanpur area under Churaibari police station limits. He is accused of taking the girl to his residence, prompting her father to lodge a formal complaint with the police. Based on the complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Following the registration of the case, police launched a detailed investigation and began efforts to trace the accused. Acting on specific inputs, a team led by Officer-in-Charge Debabrata Biswas and Investigating Officer Uma Namah, along with a sizeable police force, conducted a raid at Debnath’s house in Nivia under Ratabari. During the operation, the minor girl was successfully rescued, officials confirmed.

Police sources revealed that after committing the crime, Debnath had been absconding for several months and was reportedly hiding in Bengaluru to evade arrest. He recently returned to his native village, which enabled the police to track his movements and carry out the arrest operation.

After his arrest, Debnath was produced before the Dharmanagar District Court on Monday. Police have sought his remand for further interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities stated that the arrest is a significant development in the case and emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice. They also indicated that further investigation is underway to examine Debnath’s possible involvement in other criminal activities.
