Tripura witnessed another political development in its tribal belt on Thursday as 33 voters from 11 families formally left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) during a programme held at Hejamara Bazaar under the Simna Assembly Constituency.

The induction ceremony took place during a discussion meeting organised by the Tipra Motha Party at Baikunthpur Village Council. The event was attended by Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, former Executive Member and current MDC of Simna-Tamakari constituency Rabindra Debbarma, TMP Hejamara Block president Nirmal Debbarma and several party leaders and supporters.

The new members were formally welcomed into the party fold with the Tipra Motha flag, symbolising their allegiance to the regional political movement led by Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma.

Addressing the gathering, party leaders said the defections reflected growing support for Tipra Motha’s ideology and strengthened the movement for the rights and welfare of indigenous communities in Tripura. Leaders reiterated that the party remains committed to protecting the interests, identity and aspirations of the Tiprasa people.

They also highlighted the leadership of Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma, stating that his efforts to unite tribal communities and raise regional issues have significantly contributed to the party’s expansion across the hill areas.

Political observers described the development as an indication of changing political dynamics in Tripura’s tribal belts, even after the completion of the TTAADC elections. According to local analysts, Simna has emerged as one of the first visible areas where cracks are appearing in the BJP’s traditional support base in the hills.

The latest defections are expected to intensify political competition ahead of future village committee elections, with Tipra Motha continuing to position itself as a strong regional force advocating indigenous rights, regional empowerment and tribal unity in Tripura.
