Agartala, June 23: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday delivered a strong message against past irregularities in Tripura’s sporting bodies while leading the Olympic Day Rally organized by the Tripura Olympic Association in Agartala. He asserted that allegations of athletes from outside the state competing under Tripura’s banner would no longer be tolerated and assured that only genuine athletes from Tripura would represent the state in national and international competitions.
The rally commenced from Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, passed through major routes of the city, and concluded at the same venue. It witnessed enthusiastic participation from athletes, sports officials, students, and sports enthusiasts. Among those present were Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumdar, MLA Antara Sarkar Deb, Sports Secretary Dr. P.K. Chakraborty, Sports Director L. Darlong, Tripura Olympic Association Chairman Ratan Saha, and Secretary Sujit Roy.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha highlighted the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. He urged citizens, especially the youth, to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle through regular participation in sports and physical activities.
“Let us continue to promote the spirit of sportsmanship and encourage greater participation in physical activities for a healthier and stronger society,” the Chief Minister said.
Dr. Saha also emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure across the state. He noted that earlier committees had failed to contribute effectively to sports development, but the present administration is working to bridge those gaps through modern facilities and improved governance.
He informed that indoor stadiums, athletic tracks, and galleries are being named after distinguished sportspersons to honour their contributions to Tripura’s sporting legacy. He further assured that former athletes would receive due recognition and support.
Sports Minister Tinku Roy said the government is making sincere efforts to provide opportunities for talented youth in sports and other sectors. He revealed that discussions are underway to expand sports quota employment opportunities for deserving athletes.
In a major boost to the state’s sporting fraternity, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has recently granted formal recognition to the Tripura Olympic Association, paving the way for greater participation of Tripura athletes in national and international events.
