Agartala, March 23: The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) has emerged as the first political party to formally enter the electoral fray for the 2026 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, announcing its initial list of nine candidates. All the constituencies covered in this phase are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, underlining the party’s strategy to consolidate its core tribal support base.

The candidate list, released by IPFT General Secretary Swapan Debbarma, includes nominees for key constituencies such as Damcherra–Jampui, Maharani–Teliamura, Ramchandraghat, Simna–Tomakari, Amtali–Golaghati, Ampinagar, Raima Valley, Nutan Bazar–Malbasa, and Birchandranagar–Kalsi. Party leaders stated that the selected candidates, including Udar Ram Reang and Jitiram Tripura, have strong grassroots connections and represent the aspirations of indigenous communities.

Speaking to the media, IPFT leaders indicated that a second list of candidates will be released on Tuesday, completing the party’s lineup for the polls. They also confirmed that all nine candidates named in the first list are scheduled to file their nominations before their respective Returning Officers on the same day, signaling a swift and coordinated campaign rollout.

Political observers view IPFT’s early announcement as a calculated move aimed at gaining momentum and sending a strong message to tribal voters ahead of the elections. By taking the lead in candidate declaration, the party has attempted to project preparedness and organizational clarity at a time when other political players are still in the process of finalizing their nominees.

The TTAADC, which administers nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area, remains a crucial institution for tribal self-governance and political representation. As such, the upcoming elections are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape in the state’s tribal belt.

With this proactive step, IPFT has set the tone for the election season, potentially influencing the strategies of rival parties and the dynamics of alliances in the days ahead.
