Agartala, March 31:
Putting to rest rumours of an alleged abduction in the Ganaraj Chowmuhani area, East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Subrata Debnath has clarified that the incident involved a theft case and not a kidnapping.

According to police, two individuals—identified as Sakil Mia and Nayan Deb, both residents of Agartala—were apprehended while attempting to steal iron rods from a Smart City construction site. The duo was reportedly caught red-handed by staff of the contractor overseeing the project.

OC Debnath stated that the contractor’s personnel intercepted the accused during the act, restrained them, and transported them to the East Police Station, where they were formally handed over to the authorities. “There is no abduction case here. These individuals are known offenders involved in theft. They were caught stealing iron rods from the Smart City project site and subsequently brought to the police,” he said.

He further confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused and that both individuals would be produced before the court on Tuesday for further legal proceedings.

The clarification comes amid widespread rumours circulating in the locality, which had suggested that an abduction had taken place. Police officials emphasised that such misinformation can create unnecessary panic and urged the public to rely only on verified sources.

Authorities also highlighted that thefts targeting construction materials, particularly from large-scale infrastructure projects like Smart City developments, have become a growing concern. Such incidents not only result in financial losses but can also delay ongoing public works.

Police have assured that increased vigilance and stricter security measures will be implemented around key project sites to prevent similar incidents in the future. They also appealed to citizens to promptly report suspicious activities and refrain from spreading unverified information.

The incident underscores the importance of timely police clarification in maintaining public confidence and ensuring that misinformation does not disrupt law and order.
