Agartala: May 20: In a coordinated operation early Friday morning, a joint team of officers from the Agartala GR Police Station, 49-Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), and Kalamchoura Police Station apprehended a man suspected of involvement in human trafficking.

The accused, identified as Sharif Mia (42), is a resident of the Kalamchoura area in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. He lives near the Dudhpukur Mosque and is the son of the late Bachchu Mia.

The arrest was made in connection with an ongoing investigation into a suspected human trafficking network operating near the Indo-Bangladesh border. While full details of the case remain under wraps, police officials have confirmed that the case may be linked to a wider trafficking ring active in the region.

Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of Agartala GR Police Station, stated that a special team has been assigned to interrogate Sharif Mia. “We are working to uncover the broader network behind the operation. Based on the interrogation so far, more arrests are likely in the coming days,” he said.

Authorities suspect that the trafficking ring may have cross-border linkages and have intensified surveillance and coordination in vulnerable border regions to dismantle the entire network.

As per standard legal procedure, the accused was produced before a court on Friday, where investigators sought his remand for further questioning and evidence gathering.

The arrest marks a significant step in Tripura’s efforts to combat human trafficking, particularly in sensitive border areas. Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on such criminal networks and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
