Agartala, July 15: Tripura has joined the national-level campaign ‘Mediation for the Nation’, launched under the joint initiative of the National Legal Services Authority’s Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC) and the Supreme Court of India. This special campaign aims to promote mediation as an effective and low-cost alternative dispute resolution mechanism across the country and will run for 90 days — from July 1 to September 30, 2025.
Announcing the campaign in Tripura, Jhuma Dutta Choudhury, Member Secretary of the Tripura State Legal Services Authority (TSLSA), addressed a press conference held at the TSLSA Conference Hall.
She said the special mediation drive covers a wide range of cases, including matrimonial disputes, motor accident compensation claims, domestic violence cases, cheque dishonour, commercial conflicts, employment-related issues, compoundable criminal offences, consumer disputes, loan recoveries, property partition, eviction matters, and land acquisition cases. These are being referred to certified mediators for amicable settlement.
“Mediation is a recognised method of dispute resolution that brings both parties to the negotiating table, often leading to settlement in a cost-effective and efficient manner,” Choudhury explained.
Currently, Tripura has nine mediation centres — one at the Tripura High Court and eight others, one in each district. As part of this campaign, significant progress has already been made. According to the latest data till July 9, the number of cases referred to mediation centres from different district courts include 94 cases in West Tripura district, 68 cases in Unakoti, 68 cases in Khowai, 98 cases in Sepahijala, 104 cases in Dhalai, 18 cases in North Tripura, 193 cases in Gomati, and 353 cases in South Tripura.
