Agartala, July 19: In a strong show of dissent, the opposition CPI(M) staged a mass protest in Agartala today against the recent surge in water, electricity, piped gas, and milk prices imposed by the state government. The demonstration began at Melarmath and culminated in a sit-in protest outside the Water Board office, drawing large participation from party workers and city residents.
Senior CPIM leaders, including former minister Manik Dey and Amal Chakraborty, led the protest. Speaking at the gathering, Manik Dey sharply criticized the state government for raising utility tariffs without improving services.
“The government has increased water charges without setting up a single new treatment plant,” Dey alleged. He said, “Urban residents are facing worsening water supply, and in rural areas, the situation is even more dire. The government must immediately roll back the water tax.”
Dey also expressed concern over the rising cost of basic necessities, pointing out that the price of milk had recently climbed to Rs 83.87 per litre — the second hike in just a few days. “How can patients and working families afford essential nutrition when their incomes remain stagnant?” he questioned.
Accusing the government of lacking transparency, Dey said, “Multiple price hikes have been imposed without explanation. If the government does not justify these decisions, people will be forced to take to the streets.”
He further alleged that public dissent is being stifled. “People are losing their right to speak out. But there’s a limit to patience. When people are pushed too far, they push back,” Dey warned, adding that even members within the ruling party have begun to voice concern.
