Agartala, July 23: In a significant development regarding Tripura’s road infrastructure, Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb met with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Wednesday. The meeting focused on the progress, quality, and future planning of ongoing and upcoming road projects in the state.

According to sources from Deb’s office, one of the key issues discussed was the adverse impact of heavy rainfall on traditional blacktop roads in Tripura. Due to water accumulation and surface runoff, blacktop roads deteriorate rapidly, requiring frequent repairs. In response, the central government is now considering giving greater emphasis to RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) road construction, which is more durable and sustainable in rain-prone regions like Tripura.

Another crucial point of discussion was the frequent concerns raised about the quality of several road projects in the state. Addressing this, it was agreed that a high-level central inspection team would be sent to Tripura to assess the ground realities. The team’s objective will be to investigate complaints about substandard construction, and if negligence or unethical practices are identified on the part of any contractor, company, or official, strict action will be taken. This initiative aims to ensure transparency and accountability in public infrastructure works.

In addition, the long-pending demand for a comprehensive drainage system along NH-8 at Shantir Bazar, raised recently by Biplab Kumar Deb, has already been incorporated into the annual project plan, signalling prompt attention by the ministry.

Progress updates were also shared regarding the construction of RCC bridges over the Gomati and Muhuri rivers, and the Agartala-Sabroom approach road and bridge project, which is expected to be completed by November this year.

The meeting also reviewed the status of 11 ongoing road and infrastructure projects across the state. Emphasis was placed on expediting completion while maintaining quality standards, officials confirmed.
