Guwahati, May 12 (IANS): Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power in the state for the third straight time after securing a decisive mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma at a grand swearing-in ceremony held at Khanapara in Guwahati. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union Ministers, NDA Chief Ministers and senior BJP leaders from across the country.

Along with Sarma, five Ministers were inducted into the new Council of Ministers. Former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Charan Boro and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog were among those who took oath as Ministers.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also attended the ceremony, along with leaders from 22 NDA-ruled states, making the occasion a major political gathering for the alliance.

Several prominent religious figures, including 15 Satradhikars from Assam’s Vaishnavite monasteries, were present at the event. Leading industrialists, cultural personalities and distinguished guests from various sectors also attended the ceremony.

Dressed in traditional Assamese attire, Sarma took the oath amid loud cheers and celebrations by BJP workers and supporters gathered at the venue. The atmosphere was marked by enthusiasm as party leaders hailed the NDA’s return to power as a reflection of public confidence in the government’s performance.

This marks Sarma’s second consecutive term as Chief Minister after he first assumed office in 2021. Under his leadership, the BJP has further strengthened its political base in the northeastern state and scripted history by forming the government in Assam for the third consecutive term.

Earlier in the day, Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party and NDA Legislature Party in Assam. He later met Governor Acharya and formally staked claim to form the new government.
