Agartala: April 06: In a significant development, North Tripura police successfully apprehended Onida Riang, a leader of the Tripura United National Front (TUNF), during a special operation. The operation was conducted in the Anand Bazaar police station area based on specific intelligence regarding the infiltration of armed cadres of the militant group.

The operation, led by North Tripura’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Jeremiah Darlong (TPS), and SDPO Kanchanpur, Ashish Kumar Thakur (IPS), involved a team of police personnel headed by the Officer-in-Charge of Anand Bazaar police station. At approximately 11:15 PM, the police team encountered resistance when miscreants hiding in a jhum hut at Setudwar Para opened fire. In response, the police returned fire, leading to the arrest of Onida Riang.

During the operation, authorities recovered a factory-made firearm, live ammunition, and extortion notices from the arrested individual. A case has been registered at Anand Bazaar police station against Onida Riang on charges of illegal possession of weapons, extortion, and attempted murder of police personnel.

The North Tripura district police have stated that search operations are ongoing to locate other members of the group. They have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and taking decisive action against criminal activities in the region.
